Valuation and the arts
The various sub-disciplines of humanities and arts contribute to culture, creativity, and a more inclusive society. The humanities are invaluable when it comes to understanding the impact of new discoveries and technological innovations in other scientific fields.
Humanities and arts research centres in Latvia are mainly located at institutes of the University of Latvia (UL) and other higher education institutions. Among these, the Art Academy of Latvia, the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, and the Academy of Culture are developing a joint PhD programme. The National Library of Latvia and cultural institutions like the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art or the National History Museum of Latvia also have a strong research base.
The great diversity of the humanities and arts field and the relatively small institutions emphasises the role of individual researchers and the importance of personal international connections in the development of Latvian research. Humanities and arts are closely linked to cultural processes, which is reflected in the sector’s cooperation with heritage institutions and the creative industries.
