Integrating medical research
Medicine and health science stand out in the context of integrated science. Research institutions, medical education, and the largest state hospitals represent a deeply interconnected ecosystem with increasing private partnerships. This field clearly demonstrates the benefits of academia being aligned with public interest, forming the basis for a discourse about public health. Various aspects of the field are connected by the actors themselves – many researchers are simultaneously practising doctors and educators.
Medicine has been and still is one of the internationally most researched fields. Medicine and health science research links such fields as engineering, material sciences, and ICT, as well as social sciences and the humanities. The medicine and health sciences field illustrate the steady development of the whole research cycle, from the laboratory to clinical and experimental research, while simultaneously returning to basic science and interdisciplinary research, adding value in the short- and long-term.
