Since joining the European Space Agency (ESA) as an EU Member State in 2015, Latvian companies have developed dozens of research instruments, electronic components, materials and Earth observation solutions. Space-related activities can significantly help Latvia develop its "value chain" by developing research-intensive and innovative products. Such space activities can be considered as capabilities yet to be fully utilized in the space sector and should be further developed. In the field of electronic components, there is extensive competence in the development and supply of integrated chips.

Latvia also has a rich heritage in the field of satellite laser location and radar location. This set of skills, as well as Latvia's leading technologies in the field of event timing devices, heat management and infrastructure, can be used in the relevant ESA programs.

Significant experts are involved in the development of radiation detectors and measuring instruments, which improve the scientific equipment used in space. Fiber optic gyroscopes are another space exploration capability that exists in Latvia. This technology is offered by only a few companies in the world, and it is potentially of great interest to include it in ESA programs.

Latvia's most important space industry companies:

1. SIA Allatherm – Develops innovative thermal management and refueling systems that can be used in space. In cooperation with OHB, a unique technology for refueling is being developed - a xenon fuel pump for the future NASA space station Lunar Gateway.

2. SIA Eventech – Develops unique and accurate time measuring devices - timers designed for measuring light, laser beam speed and event time. Participates in ESA mission "HĒRA" by developing altimeter and LIDAR technologies.

3. RD Alfa Microelectronics - develops certified and radiation resistant integrated chips and microelectronic components for space and aviation equipment.

4. SIA Fiber Optical Solution – manufactures optical gyroscopes and high-quality navigation equipment, which only 5 countries in the world can produce.

5. A/S SMW Group - an automotive and aerospace manufacturing company that works with a variety of aluminum and magnesium alloys used in the aerospace industry. Involved in several ESA projects.

6. SIA VIRATEC - is a derivative company (spin-off) of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, whose goal is to commercialize and market the TT&C (telemetry, tracking and management) service developed by Ventspils University of Applied Sciences.

7. SIA Baltic Satellite Serviss - develops multiple earth observation applications and services with early customers, facilitating digital transformation in the public and private sectors.
