Developing research excellence
The medicine and health science sector in Latvia is driven by ambitious goals. Within this framework, a number of institutions have significant potential for scientific excellence and practical discoveries. In this regard, the recent establishment of the Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence (BBCE) as part of the Horizon 2020 programme was a significant milestone. BBCE provides the opportunity to combine expertise and infrastructure to create critical mass and stand out in specific fields, simultaneously generating spill-over effects in other disciplines.
Well-established research institutions like LIOS have been able to adapt a highly competitive research vision and policy in the context of infrastructure, performance, the acquisition of new equipment, successful grant applications, and administration. Similarly, Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital is well on its way to be internationally competitive and could become the driving force for clinical medicine in Latvia. The research infrastructure for clinical research at the hospital meets the highest standards, and the research results reflect a motivating research environment.
