On September 19, the Smart Cities Conference will take place for the third year in the Science and Innovation Center of Riga Technical University (RTU), Ķīpsalas Street 6A, which will bring together representatives of municipalities, technology companies and the academic field to discuss future mobility technologies and judge what are the possibilities and barriers to testing them in urban environments. The conference is one of the events of the European Mobility Week in Riga.

The purpose of the conference is to promote understanding of the potential of future mobility solutions in creating a sustainable urban environment and the various obstacles currently imposed by the legal framework. At the conference, local and international experts will share knowledge and experience on automated flights, the development of drone traffic, the potential of other autonomous vehicles, data management issues, etc. This year, the conference is organized in cooperation with the municipality of Riga as one of the activities of the European Mobility Week. The European Mobility Week takes place every year from September 16 to 22 to raise citizens' awareness of sustainable mobility in cities.

How easy is it to create future mobility innovations, what are the opportunities and obstacles to be reckoned with? How to regulate the use of public airspace for drones and how to justify the need to test unmanned vehicles on public roads? How to ensure the necessary data transmission capacity while not forgetting about data security? The answers to these and many other questions will be clarified during the conference by experts from various fields and members of the innovation ecosystem, including the executive director of the Israeli mobility community «EcoMotion» Jennifer Schwartz, the Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens, the chief specialist in strategic planning issues of Riga State Municipality Stanislavs Šeiko and others.

Visitors to the conference will also have the opportunity to watch demonstrations of mobility technologies and visit the RTU laboratories to get to know the infrastructure and available support for the creation of innovations. The number of participants in the event is limited, you can register for the conference until September 17 – https://fienta.com/lv/viedo-pilsetu-konference-2024 The event can also be watched online on the Facebook page of the RTU Science and Innovation Center.

"The Smart Cities Conference is a great opportunity for the state administration, municipalities, academic sector and start-ups to meet in one room in order to stimulate dialogue about what we want to see in future cities, in addition, using the opportunity to take over the experience of international environmental experts. By aligning the university's capabilities with the needs of the industry and the priorities of local governments, we can promote the testing and implementation of innovative mobility technologies in cities, thus helping cities become more sustainable and more human-friendly", emphasizes Liene Briede, vice-rector for innovation at RTU.

The conference is organized by the RTU Science and Innovation Center in cooperation with the open innovation movement "VEFRESH", the Riga State City Municipality and other partners. The event is organized by the "EIT Urban Mobility" initiative of the innovation community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, and supported by the technology company "Tet" and the mobile technology company "Latvijas mobilais telefons" (LMT).
