Conference "Colloquium Balticum"

Face-to-face event
About event

From October 17 to 19, the Colloquium Balticum conference on the networking of Baltic Sea region countries will take place at the University of Latvia (UL) in the Small Aula, Raiņa Boulevard 19, and in the House of Sciences, Jelgavas Street 3. The conference will focus on issues related to ancient cultural heritage, specifically that of ancient Greek and Roman cultures, in an unusual context: exploring how artificial and natural elements (in Latin, naturalia et artificialia) have coexisted from the beginnings of European culture to the present day. The current pressing issue of artificial intelligence will also be discussed—how it can be perceived and valued in ancient culture.

For three days, conversations and discussions will be held at the University of Latvia (in Latin, colloquium means 'to converse') about language, historical facts from different eras, and texts that will illuminate the conference theme, prompting reflection on relevant contemporary issues.

The program demonstrates a genuine interest in the Riga colloquium: university researchers have submitted topics that are not only intriguing to scholars of the ancient world but also to a broad audience. The tradition of the colloquium includes participation from students of networking universities, adding a special atmosphere to the event—those who are just beginning their studies or are currently engaged in their studies will be the force that potentially continues the research initiated and contributes their own thoughts, ensuring that the study of ancient cultural heritage and its reception in the Baltic region is nurtured and maintained.

The classical philologists of the University of Latvia invite not only students but everyone interested, including high school seniors, to join the ranks of classical philologists and scholars of ancient culture at Colloquium Balticum—attend the colloquium, engage in discussions, and explore the natural and artificial aspects of ancient antiquity in timeless categories.
