On-site exhibition “The Third Awakening and the Folklore Movement: Forces and Events".

From October 30, 2024, to March 1, 2025, the exhibition “The Third Awakening and the Folklore Movement: Forces and Events” is on displayed at  the "Draugu Telpa" (the Friends Room) of the National Library of Latvia. Opening hours: https://lnb.lv/en/darba-laiki/

The exhibition reveals the most significant events and individuals that shaped the character and dynamics of the folklore movement in the 1970s and 1980s and influenced social processes during the Third Awakening period.

The exhibition covers:

  • The Folklore Afternoon at the Dailes Theatre in 1978;
  • The first Daugava festival on Dole Island in 1979;
  • The Folklore Days in Riga dedicated to Andrejs Jurjāns’ 125th birthday in 1981;
  • The concert of folklore and ethnographic ensembles at the festival in Aizpute in 1982;
  • The 150th anniversary celebration of Krišjānis Barons in 1985;
  • The first folklore festival “Baltica '88” in Riga in 1988;
  • The 20th General Latvian Song and the 10th Dance Festival in 1990.

The exhibition was created by researchers Aigars Lielbārdis and Toms Ķencis from the University of Latvia’s (UL) Institute of Literature, Folklore, and Art (LFMI), with the exhibition’s designer being Krišs Salmanis. The exhibition is part of the UL LFMI project “The Folklore Movement in Latvia: Resources, Ideologies, and Practices” (No. LZP-2021/1-0243). The exhibition is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation, the National Library of Latvia, and the National Library of Latvia Support Association.
