The Discussion Festival “World Water Day 2025”

Face-to-face event
About event

On Friday, March 21, the discussion festival “World Water Day 2025” will take place. The event is dedicated to the globally significant topic of water resource protection, sustainable management, and care for the planet’s water resources. Researchers from the University of Latvia, including Inga Retiķe, Kristaps Lamsters, and Oskars Purmalis, will participate in the event.

The Melting Ice Caps

This year’s World Water Day theme focuses on the melting of glaciers, emphasizing their importance in maintaining the water and life cycles. Glaciers, mountain runoff, and snowmelt provide water for nearly two billion people – for drinking, agriculture, and energy production. However, climate change and the rapid melting of glaciers are creating serious issues for global water availability.

The discussion, moderated by Eva Johansone and Mārtiņš Spuris, will feature prominent opinion leaders and industry experts from Latvia, including Sandis Dejus, Kristaps Lamsters, Māris Zviedris, Dairis Bertāns, Kristīne Beitika, and others. Topics such as rising water levels and their consequences, how water reaches us and where it goes, what happens in sewage systems, and other important issues about the role of water in human life will be discussed.

The event will take place on March 21, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the “The Moon” venue at Riga Technical University, 6A Ķīpsalas Street, Riga.

Young Water Researchers Contest

Young researchers will have the opportunity to participate in the national selection for one of the world’s most prestigious young scientific research competitions, the “Stockholm Junior Water Prize.” This is a unique chance to increase knowledge, present ideas, and engage in international discussions about the significance of water.

Admission is free. The discussion can be followed live on Lsm.lv and on the Facebook page of the "Latvian Association of Water Supply and Sewerage Companies.
