Conference “Baltic Inland Aquaculture – Challenges and Opportunities”

The Baltic States face various challenges in the field of inland aquaculture, ranging from economic considerations and marketing to environmental sustainability and public health concerns. To address these issues, the aquaculture specialists, researchers, fish veterinarians, producers, business partners as well as other interests are invited to come together, to the conference on November 7th-8th, 2024.

Location: the Hotel Jurmala Spa & Conference Centre in Jūrmala, Latvia

Objective: To promote development of the aquaculture sector of the Baltic region, to provide a platform for knowledge exchange and innovation transfer in aquaculture. To evoke discussions and exchange of ideas on the current state and future perspectives of inland aquaculture in the Baltic region,

Organizing institutions: Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR", in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia and international organization EUROFISH, with a support of the Rural Support Service of the Republic of Latvia.

The conference will bring together representatives of the industry from the three Baltic states, as well as leading experts from the Czech Republic, Denmark, and Poland, including entrepreneurs, veterinarians, scientists, decision-makers, environmental specialists, and representatives from other sectors to meet, exchange experiences, and establish new contacts.

November 7, 2024, the conference will feature a diverse range of presentations and discussions, starting with an introduction by the Agriculture Minister of Latvia and representatives from Eurofish. Topics will include aquaculture industry and economics in Latvia, market situations for aquaculture products in Europe, and the introduction of new guides for pond and recirculation aquaculture.

Experience stories from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia will highlight innovations, best practices, and recent developments in aquaculture, covering topics such as land-based salt water aquaculture, organic aquaculture, and algae cultivation.

The afternoon session will focus on aquaculture's role in human health and environmental quality, featuring presentations on farmed fish health assessment, future pond systems, energy consumption reduction, and the processing and reuse of aquaculture residue products.

A poster session will provide an opportunity for further discussions and networking, with presentations on various topics including aquaculture and environmental pollution, fish health, and disease control.

November 8, 2024, conference participants will visit the BIOR Aquaculture Innovation and Infrastructure Center (Tome).

During conference the updated guidelines will be presented: "A Guide to Recirculation Aquaculture, An Introduction to the New Environmentally Friendly and Highly Productive Closed Fish Farming Systems".
