Scientific conference "Acts. Facts. Artifacts."
About event
On November 21 and 22, the Latvian National Museum of Literature and Music (LNMLM) will hold its annual scientific conference. This year, the museum continues the series of conferences and publications titled "Acts. Facts. Artifacts." discussing current developments in museology in Latvia and exploring the collections of various Latvian museums. The question of the digital age and its integration into museum collections is becoming increasingly relevant today, so this year's conference will focus on collections and their compilation both in the past and present.
The concepts in the title of the conference are closely related to museology, research, and museum work. An act refers to a document created in a specific form; a fact refers to recorded information about a feature, phenomenon, event, etc.; an artifact is an object made or shaped by humans, such as a tool or an artwork in museology.
Museologist François Mairesse states: "A museum cannot exist without engaging in research, although the public (including politicians, officials, etc.) does not always understand this. A museum’s collection can be used, interpreted, and enriched through research." The LNMLM annual conference highlights the research potential of museum collections not only at LNMLM but also at other museums in Latvia, memory institutions, and educational establishments.
The conference will cover topics such as trends in collection building, museums in the digital age, musical instruments: acquisitions, collection, research, international significance of Latvian collections and archives, current theoretical approaches in museology, sustainability, and inclusive museums.
The conference will be held at the LNRMM cultural space "Tintnīca," at Pulka Street 8, Riga. The live stream will be available on the museum’s website rmm.lv, as well as on LNMLM's social media pages on Facebook and YouTube, where participants can ask questions to the speakers and engage in discussions.
