The international scientific conference "Balticum Organicum Syntheticum" is taking place in Riga this week. It is the biggest researsh event in the Baltics in the field of organic chemistry, which takes place every two years in one of the capitals of the Baltic states and gathers researchers from Europe and the USA. About 300 participants from 20 countries have registered for this year's conference.
Researchers from the Scripps Research Institute in the USA, the Paris School of Industrial Physics and Chemistry, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and other prestigious universities will give plenary lectures at the Balticum Organicum Syntheticum conference organized by the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis this year.
During the conference it is intended to discuss the latest scientific trends in organic chemistry, paying attention to solutions applicable in the industrial environment.
The "Balticum Organicum Syntheticum" conference is the realization of the dream of three outstanding researchers in exile from the Baltics for the inclusion of the region's researchers in the world scientific environment. At the end of the nineties of the last century, the Lithuanian researcher Viktors Sniečkus living in Canada came up with such an idea, which was supported by the outstanding Latvian chemist Edvīns Vedējs working in the USA and his Estonian colleague Jāns Pesti. The idea came true in 2000, when the first "Balticum Organicum Syntheticum" conference was held in Vilnius.
Since the first conference "Balticum Organicum Syntheticum", the constant hallmark of the events has been excellent scientific quality. Nearly 10 Nobel laureates have given plenary lectures at conferences so far.
Another distinctive feature is the presence of excellent speakers from the industrial sector. This year's conference will feature lectures by researchers from Bristol-Myers Squibb, Amgen Inc., Merck Research Laboratories, Roche and other companies.
Likewise, among the lecturers of "Balticum Organicum Syntheticum" there are always excellent researchers from the Baltic countries. For Latvian researchers, the "Balticum Organicum Syntheticum" conference is an opportunity to show the world their research achievements. Participation in this conference opens up opportunities to make important international contacts, promote cooperation and exchange ideas. This conference helps not only to strengthen the prestige of Latvian research, but also demonstrates the country's contribution to the development of organic and medical chemistry, bringing Latvia's name to the world in the field of research.
