By securing funding, the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry and SIA V.L.T. have developed innovative, knowledge-based methods and technologies, as well as created innovative packaging materials.

The The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) in collaboration with SIA V.L.T., has developed new biodegradable fiber-based packaging materials that offer an alternative to traditional plastic packaging while adapting to existing paper and molded cardboard production technologies.
Researchers’ Contribution
The project was carried out by Dr. chem. Laura Andže, Dr. biol. Ilze Irbe, and Dr. sc. ing. Inese Filipova. Through collaboration between LSIWC and SIA V.L.T., new methods have been developed for obtaining biodegradable materials and their application in packaging.
As part of the project, egg carton prototypes with enhanced moisture resistance were created using chitosan additives, providing an alternative to plastic-based packaging materials.

The research and experimental development work is based on:
- Innovative methods that enable the processing of various lignocellulose resources into sustainable materials.
- Sustainable chemistry solutions to ensure environmentally friendly packaging alternatives.
- Adaptation of existing paper and cardboard industries to promote the use of new biodegradable materials.

Results and Benefits
This innovation has already received recognition both in Latvia and internationally. The project has also successfully secured co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), supporting further development and expanding research efforts.
