Let us take a look at the concept of the floating islands of the "BioFloat" project, which was developed by the project partner SIA "ALPS ainavu darbnīca" in close cooperation with the project partners and invited experts. In cooperation with botanists, work continues on the selection of the most suitable plant species, and this is not an easy task! Invasive plant species that can suppress native ones should be avoided. Also, the plants must be able to reduce the water pollution specific to each pilot site, and provide a suitable environment for insects, including pollinators. A number of plants are very palatable to ducks and other birds, which creates additional headaches for our experts. Finally, the island must also be visually attractive and serve as an educational element of nature in each of the municipalities. Challenging, isn't it?
The developed concept of floating islands will serve as guidelines for municipalities to develop technical specifications for the needs of each water body and to announce procurement. The guidelines will be universal and everyone can use them. But what exactly will the floating islands of the "BioFloat" project, located in Cēsis and Gulbene, look like? You will find out if you follow the activities of "BioFloat"!
