Embarking on a career in research can be an exciting journey filled with exciting discoveries and opportunities. However, like any path, it has its challenges and uncertainties.

Advantages of a career in research:

  1. Intellectual development. The career of a scientist will be most enjoyed by the curious, who are always looking for answers to interesting questions and never cease to wonder about the world around them. On the other hand, physicists have heard that physics teaches structured thinking and solving problems, which is useful not only in the work of a researcher, but in life in general. For a person who has decided to dedicate his professional life to research, it is important to follow the latest research and achievements in his field, which not only sharpens the mind, but also inspires. "The main thing that characterizes the profession of a researcher is the need for lifelong learning. Maybe to some it might seem like a minus of the profession, but it gives me confidence that I will be interested in what I do for a long time," comments Viktorija Pankratova, research assistant at the Spectroscopy Laboratory of the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia (LU CFI), who is currently continuing her studies at the University of Latvia in the doctoral program, materials physics specialization.
  2. Contribution to society. If you want to connect your life with a profession that can change the world - the profession of a researcher is exactly what you need! The profession of a researcher is suitable for those who care that the work invested can have a significant impact on society and the world as a whole: from creating better methods, equipment or their components in medicine to ensuring energy independence and sustainability. Remember that not only engineers but also researcher have contributed to the invention of everyday things such as smartphones, computers, communication satellites, medical equipment and various vehicles.
  3. Diverse options. Studying in one of the STEM fields opens up a wide range of career opportunities in the life sciences, chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering, and more and more. In addition, you can prove yourself in a research institution and its laboratory, but you can also help others to fall in love with various fields of exact research by becoming an educator or lecturer. A career in research allows you to work both in an academic environment and to fulfill yourself in one of the research-intensive industrial companies, as well as, for example, to contribute to the creation of national research policy. "Another plus of working in science is the opportunity to work with outstanding researchers from all over the world. Traveling and visiting conferences in different countries are an integral part of a researchers’ daily work. It depends on each person's personality, whether they like it or not," admits Viktorija Pankratova.
